Walnut Court Apartments and Meadowlark Commons Transitional Housing is a pilot project and one more option
offered by New Beginnings. The goal is to provide answers regarding housing problems to small towns who cannot afford
to provide a variety of different facilities. For these communities, the affordability problem is compounded by the down turn
in a economy based on agriculture and the loss of higher paying manufacturing jobs.
To accomplish this goal a unique financing plan was conceived; to combine Low Income Housing Tax Credits, a Federal
Home Loan Bank's Affordable Housing Loan and equity investment by New Beginnings to build both the permanent
affordable housing (Walnut Court Apartments) and the transitional housing units (Meadowlark Commons Transitional
Housing) within the same complex. It utilizes the rent incomes from the affordable housing units to assist in paying for
operations and supportive services of the transitional side. The programs, services, and resources are actually used by as
those in transitional housing and those living in the permanent housing.

New Beginnings' transitional housing coupled with our programs can help men,
women and children become self sufficient and less dependent on subsidies
and vouchers (in smaller communities there are fewer options). Meadowlark
Commons provides 16 units of transitional apartment living. These apartments
are designed to be a stair-step for lower income households who currently
are or are threatened by loss of their homes. They are fully furnished and
offer quiet elegance, privacy and community.
Additional facilities include a commercial kitchen used as part of our on site job
training, congregate dining area, community activity room that offers an area
for music, movie watching, exercise equipment, small child's play area and
game computers for the older children. It also offers a computer lab with adult
learning software that can tie into the local community college for testing and
enrollment in courses. There are laundry facilities both residential and
commercial and a patio area the encompasses the outdoors play area.
The community room is where workshops provided by volunteers present what
they know best to those eager to learn it. They include financial management
by several local bank employees, how to locate a job by a local human
resource professional association, how to look for a home to fit your needs
and resources, the importance of voting, strengthening families, etc. We are
always looking for these type of community resources so if you would like to
volunteer...... donate and volunteer
Meadowlark Commons is the same type of program New Beginnings has
offered since 1994, only with more tools for success and the creation of
different pathways for growth into self sufficiency. This is the basic mission of
Meadowlark Commons, to help people transition into permanent housing with
the skills necessary to maintain it and to envision and reach for a life that is
dreamed of.

The spring of 2008 brought another 20 units of transitional housing.
These additional apartments were built to meet the growing need for
people to develop an adequate income relative to the cost of living and
their capacities. This housing was first proposed as re-entry housing for
offenders leaving the correctional facility of Hutchinson. However, it is New
Beginnings philosophy that everyone who lives in a community is a part of
the community and so we build our housing for any and all in need of it.
We do have a program that works with offenders prior to release and
then continues on after their release.
Fox Run was built on the site where once a foundry employed many of the
communities citizens. This housing will be coupled with job readiness
training in the fall of 2009 and is a testimony to what is possible when
times necessitate a change. This project changes the face of this
neighborhood considerably and adds to down town revitalization.
This two story apartment complex was built "green". It is heated and
cooled with Geothermal energy and hot water is supplied by a solar hot
water system. Healthy building materials were used to create an
environment that fosters healthy living for the many families, children and
individuals who are waiting for this transitional housing.
The location for Fox Run is in the middle of the service center of down
town Hutchinson and 2 blocks from the Boys & Girls club. It is served by
the Reno County Area transport buses. The Center for New Beginnings
houses other non-profits such as, First Call For Help, SRS Access, Mid
Kansas Action Agency, Early Head Start, Healthy Families, The Farm Inc.,
Substance Abuse Center of Kansas, Communities that care, Hutchinson
Affordable Legal Clinic, and Center for Behavioral Health.

"New Beginnings gave my daughter and me a chance"
|
Amy and her daughter were without a
home when they sought out New
Beginnings in 2005. She now has a
good job and is renting one of the
affordable housing apartments built by
New Beginnings. Amy is making strides
toward eventual home ownership
"New Beginnings was there for me and my daughter when we had nowhere else to turn.
Coming from a broken relationship, I felt alone and helpless, even feeling as if God was
nowhere to be found. New Beginnings gave me a safe place to think about what got me
there and how I could improve my situation.
Through financial seminars, counseling, and staff outreach, I was able to stand on my feet
and look at transition in into New Beginnings' Walnut Court Apartments.
Through renewed faith in God and many prayers, I was able to move into Walnut Court. My
life has completely changed." Amy Kling
