Emergency Housing - New Beginnings maintains outreach, intake & assessment
to facilitate this community wide program. The purpose of this program is to provide
temporary emergency housing for people who have become homeless. An assessment
of each person's needs directs the specialist to access the community resources that
best suit the person's needs. Sometimes it is first months rent, when there is an income
to pay the next months rent; sometimes it is other agencies housing funds such as
those for the elderly or disabled; or sometimes it is a rental, with arrangements worked
out with landlords through our housing specialist; or transitional housing for those who
need longer to gain skills and income. Motel vouchers for overnight stay are used as the
temporary housing while these other arrangements are being made. This provides a
safe environment that has showers, phones and privacy. New Beginnings operates this
program in conjunction with the City of Hutchinson.
Transitional Housing - New Beginnings provides all aspect of housing including
furnished studio, 1bedroom, 2 bedroom apartments, utilities, food, personal supplies,
and programs designed to offer opportunities to rebuild lives. Meadowlark Commons
has 16 apartments that an individual or family may utilize for 12 months. The residents
at Meadowlark Commons have access to the formal dining room/meeting room,
computer lab, game / exercise room, and the children's play area. Community members
offer mentoring, job coaching, financial planning and many other workshop topics. This
transitional living site also provides on site job training and a support network that
moves with the person or family into their new neighborhood.
New Beginnings Fox Run are another 20 apartments for transitional housing that
allows people to continue to work on their dreams for the future, save money to move
into a place of their own and acquire the necessary furnishing for their new home all with
the goal that they will be self sufficient and sustainable when they move.
On The Road - To Where You Want to Be Coaching Programs
New Beginnings Director, Shara Gonzales created this method to recreate a person's life "one day at
a time". It is part of a larger program entitled '"The Human Family Approach"
The Road To Stabilization
This process allows a person to determine the needed physical resources
necessary to rebuild their life, make a plan and then set that plan into
motion. On The Road To Stabilization includes a classic traumatic event
approach. We become the attendants in a "life crisis" emergency room. If
the acute situation is not immediately attended to it often becomes chronic
and the unaided coping skills developed during crisis become generational.
The OTRS process focuses all attention on the immediate critical needs, the
resources needed to alleviate the crisis; the resources needed for long term
support and imparts that immediacy and resoluteness. By helping the
person or family find stability, "time" and "space" are provided to dream
about what is possible and what is their unique contribution to this life.
The Road To Your Goals
The basic needs have been met. The trauma that clouded decision making
is healing. There is time to reflect, plan and move on. Standing in this
median spot, it is possible to see in all directions; the past, the present and
options for the future. Working together the Life Coach and the person or
family have built a foundation of trust, support, and collective problem
solving; all the elements necessary for tackling the tasks ahead.
The time and energy invested by each person will reward them for a long
time to come. The intense focus on a plan of their own design takes
determination and a great deal of courage, as all life changes do. It is not
easy. However, The Road to Your Goals, will draw on their strengths and
their skills so that each person can meet the challenge. It will direct their
best efforts in ways that teach how to continue to create the life they want. It
utilizes their hearts desire to motivate this work. The often silent dreams and
hopes are not only acknowledged, they are encouraged. The Road to Your
Goals becomes a spiral of action towards dreaming, planning and action.
The Road Home
This is preparation for a transition. If a person has been living in transitional
housing and wishes to move to permanent housing (either affordable or
market rate) and the larger community, it provides support for this transition.
Transitions always involve change and can be somewhat destabilizing. New
Beginnings provides a Housing Specialist who has developed a relationship
and various housing providers and has listings according to need. The
Housing Specialist can help a person or family find the right housing and the
right neighborhood. The resources of neighborhood are enhanced by the
relationships of others who have utilized the On The Road to Where You
Want to Be programs brought together through an ongoing support network
that includes those who are trained as peer coaches. Peer Coaches in
neighborhoods are skilled in problem solving techniques and can be great
support when needed. Each Peer Coach has been down the same road and
so, has life experiences to draw upon.
